WordPress backup plugin

This entry is part 18 of 30 in the series 30 Day Plugin Challenge

There are a lot of back up tools for WordPress and sites generally.    I know that I have quite a few premium tools designed to back up my blog and I have also been known to use the free DB Backup plugin as well as a Cpanel backup software.    But rather than tell you about the premium products that you can purchase to back up your blog I’m going to tell you about a free solution instead :)

First of all, you need to back up your blog.   And, you need to do that regularly.   Make a habit of it :)  Set a date and do it religiously.   Anyone that has ever lost a blog :( will tell you how important this task is.       You cannot rely on your web host to take back ups.  In some cases, depending on the type of hosting, they don’t back up at all and in other cases they may only back up on a periodic schedule (like once a week) which means that once your site was restored you may have lost a lot of content.

The other problem with back ups that I should mention is that often users back up only the data base of their site, or only their server files and not the database.   The whole site needs to be backed up.

Fortunately,  you can easily back up your entire site including:

  • database
  • core WordPress files
  • themes
  • plugins
  • uploads

A tar file is then created that can be stored to your  ftp repository in case it is needed.     The Snapshot WordPress backup plugin even comes with automation allowing you to schedule back ups – saves making those diary notes :)

The only downside with this plugin is that it is a little cumbersome to restore the backup if needed but the developer promises that he is working on a more “elegant” solution.

If you don’t already have a WordPress backup plugin in your arsenal then this one is a good choice.   Set it up, configure it to automate backups, test that it is working correctly and …relax :)
