If you want free traffic to your WordPress blog there are a lot of things that you can do but one of the first things should be to optimize your blog for the search engines.
If your blog is seo optimized then the search engines can find your content easily and index it, rank it which will ultimately lead to visitors finding your site.
If we type “Google” for example into the search results then surprise, surprise the first results that are returned are Google. This is because amongst other things Google have optimized their site for the search engines to find them.
There are a few things that you can do to make your site more seo friendly. First of all you can choose an SEO friendly domain name. All that means is that your domain name is one of the keywords that you want to rank for.
For example, “wp queen” is not one of my keywords that I am trying to rank for but it is the domain name for this site.
A search of Google shows that I am number 1 for that keyword (even though I wasn’t trying!) all the work for that listing was done by the domain name.
The next thing that you can do is to use a WordPress theme that is seo friendly. Now, the term “Seo friendly” means different things to different folks so I’ll just stick to some basics here. First of all, you want to make sure that the post titles are a H1 tag, that the theme is fast loading, that the content loads before the sidebar and that there are not a lot of graphics that are being used which can slow down the load time.
You can also make your images work hard for you as well. So don’t name your images “image1” because that has no seo value at all! Make sure you name your images with the name of the keyword/s that you are trying to rank for so that your image results will be returned in the image search results. Don’t over do it though!
Yep, there seems to be something in that naming the images theory!
One of the most important things that you can do is install a plugin seo helper for your blog. There are a number of plugins available for blogging seo but two of my favorites are HeadSpace 2 and Platinum SEO.
This short video will show you how to install the Platinum SEO plugin and configure it and how to use it to get full seo advantages for your pages and posts as well as your blog.
One of the other things that you should always remember to do when writing your content is to use tags. Think of tags as related keywords. So for example; if your main keyword was “dog training” then some tags that are related might be “puppy training” “dog obedience training” “dog security training” etc. Tags help to put your content in context for visitors and from a search engine point of view every tag that is created in WordPress automatically becomes a page in its own right – this simply means that it is yet another place for the search engines to find you. Like all things – don’t over do the tags – 5 is probably enough.
Finally, for internal linking a plugin like YARP is great for linking related posts together and well worth installing.
That’s enough for the quick tips today but I will add some more soon.
