Mobile blogging with WordPress
I’ve wanted an iphone for a while now and this week I’m finally getting to play with one … well it’s not mine but the love of my life and he’s allowing me to take it for a walk to Vegas this week.
This got me thinking about mobile blogging. I wrote about making your blog mobile friendly in my book WordPress For Internet Marketers but it might be time for a recap.
First of all see what your blog would look like on a mobile phone by checking the url in a mobile site checker.
Now, depending on your score in the mobile site checker and your own preference you might want to ramp things up a bit. Remember, that if you have a fancy graphic laden blog it won’t look too good on a tiny mobile screen so the idea is to offer a fast simplified version of your blog for your mobile visitors.
You don’t need to change themes to do this all you need is a simple mobile friendly plugin that will simplify your blog so it looks good on tiny tot screens. If you don’t have an iphone then you can use this alternative mobile phone blogging plugin.
Now that your blog looks good you might want to start doing some posting to it from your mobile phone as well while you are out and about. You will need to access the dashboard to do that. A snazzy plugin that provides a simplified login and dashboard is WPhone wordpress plugin.
Okay so the blog looks good time to let people know about it.
Submit a mobile site map of your blog to the big G so your blog can be returned in the search results.
You might also want to submit your mobile blog to some mobile blog directories as well for links and traffic. Here are some to get you started:
Blog Catalog
ActivNet
Total Blog
Blog Flux

The other essential to make blogs reader friendly on iPhones is to enable full feeds rather than just excerpts in your rss feed.
There is nothing worse than adding feeds to your rss reader and getting one paragraph of the post and having to click on the post title to go tithe site and then fiddle around with resizing the site so the text is readable on my phone.
Having to go through all this really puts you off reading certain blogs. After all, there aren’t many blogs that have truly unique info that you can’t just find a blog that is user friendly and offers full feeds.

Genesis themes are now said to be mobile optimized. Not sure how successful they are at looking good though. Anyone checked them out?

Genesis have great themes and excellent support. They are easy to customize and turn into something really special plus you can use the child themes that they have for sale. Check our their showcase for some real life examples.
