Have you created your WordPress site yet Fred?

Let me tell you a story

I have a friend that is a computer geek.  Let’s call him Fred* (this is not his real name)  If I have a computer problem he’ll come over and fix my computer for me and press buttons that I never knew existed.   Contrary to what most people think I’m not a computer geek – I know WordPress and that’s it :)    I don’t know about 64 bits, 32 bits and quad core systems I just want a computer that goes and goes fast because patience is not one of my virtues :)

About three years ago my friend decided that internet marketing was the way of the future.  If you have read my book WP Quick Cash you would realise that it was about this time that I wanted to change direction in my life as well.    Internet marketing seemed super cool and much better than the stressful job that I had at the time.

So, let’s fast forward and see where are we now three years later….

I admit that I got off to a slow start.  I’m technically challenged and learning to ftp and create websites was a real obstacle for me in the beginning.   There were tears involved  However, I turned that obstacle around and ended up writing a complete bible on how to use WordPress for internet marketers and continue and will continue to release other WordPress related products.   I’ve also built more sites than I can remember at times.  Currently,   I’m in the process of powering up my niche marketing blogs.

Have I reached my goals that I set when I started out? No, but I’ll get there soon

So, where’s Fred?

Well Fred has spent the last three years researching what to do, how to do it and when to do it.   Big problem here, of course, is that he hasn’t actually done anything!    Fred doesn’t like to part with any money, join a paid forum or purchase products so he spends all day, every day looking for free stuff.   Free information, free products, free tutorials.   Fred is currently super excited because he found some free themes!

Does this make Fred any money?   Not a cracker

Here’s what’s really funny.  It’s been three years, and remember that Fred is the techie one between us, and he still does not have a website up and running.

Now, of course, he has a website because I installed WordPress for him ………….a year and a half ago and it still has the default WordPress theme on it and nothing else.

Are you a Fred?

Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with research and analyzing.   There is something wrong though when that is all you do as it holds you back from taking action.

If you have Fred tendencies here’s some tips to get you started making that money making blog:

If you are not techie but have loads of marketing ideas then get someone else to install the blog for you.  Just grab your domain name and hosting and leave the rest to someone else.     You can get a blog installed super cheap at Rentacoder or GAF.

If you really want to learn to do it yourself invest some time and money.    Grab your domain name and hosting and learn how to set up wordpress by installing a test site where you can login and play around and learn the process.   Set aside a couple of days to learn this process and then set up your real site.    You can watch my tutorial videos on how to set up WordPress on You Tube.

If there’s something that you particularly want to learn to do with WordPress for example set up an ecommerce store then invest in a book or course that will show you how to do that.    Why spend money when so much information on the internet is free?    Because time is money.   The faster you learn how to do things rather than research them the faster you are on your way to building up your blog and earning income.

Keep this in mind

Stop sweating the small stuff.    I get messages from people every day about what sort of theme to use or how to do this or that.   Guess what?  It’s not important.  Why?  Because you don’t even know if your blog is going to be a winner yet.   Every time you worry about this stuff is time  taken out from creating your blog.    Some of the most popular internet marketers blogs out there have just been customized headers over the standard default wordpress theme.   It’s not holding them back why are you letting it hold you back?

Failure is your friend.    Not every blog that you set up will "work out".   It may be that it is not popular, doesn’t earn any income or doesn’t receive any traffic.    So what?   This happens.   You can do the best keyword research in the world and analyze the market until the cows come home and it still might not work out.   That’s life.   Learn from any  mistakes that you made and move on.   I’ve failed too many times to remember.  My simple system is to cut my losses by selling the site and moving on to another niche.     You don’t need to analyze the whys and wherefores you just need to take action.    Over analyzing is just an excuse to delay taking any action.

Repeat It.  If you have a blog that is converting to sales, receiving traffic then clone your successes.   Do some more keyword research for that niche and set up another blog in that niche and take over the front page of G.

Improve It.    Right, so now you have a blog set up that makes money and is so super cool that you have actually cloned it and you are in the process of taking over this niche. Now is the time that you can start improving it.  Now is when you know your work in improving it is not wasted effort because the niche is successful.    So get in there and install a cool theme, build a list,  look at alternative monetization strategies and build more traffic.

So, Fred are you ready to take some action?
