Flipping WordPress Blogs

Well Christmas is coming and in case you are thinking that it is going to be a bare Christmas this year with no sign of Santa I want to give you some inspiration to make some fast bucks.

Flipping WordPress Sites is something that I used to do but have taken time off from during this year. I talked about this in my book WP Quick Cash. I’ll be back flipping soon though – so watch out!

Flipping sites basically comes down to creating a website and selling it. Easy as that :)

There are a few ways that you can do your flips.

1) you can create a site and list it for sale the same day with 0 traffic or earnings
2) you can create the site, do some link building and get it earning a small amount per day and flip it
3) you can build up a site so it has substantial income and flip it for 10 to 16 times the earnings

When I used to flip WordPress sites I would often build sites that fell into the 1) or 2) category. I’ve never flipped a 3) site because personally if it is earning cool moolah I would want to keep it. It is an asset after all. But, what I do want to suggest is that you build a site up – take a year – so that it is a substantial asset so that if you ever need a chunk of change you will have the asset there to sell.

I use site flipping as a way of cleaning out my niches. Often when you set up niche sites it just doesn’t work out, you get bored with the niche, it doesn’t get any traffic or it just doesn’t convert. Whatever the reason it’s just a dud. If it is a dud I don’t want it in my stash of sites I want to get rid of it so I can concentrate on the winners in my stash. So, keep the winners cull the losers.

Here’s some tips if you are thinking of earning some Christmas cash flipping sites the 1) or 2) way.

Nip over to Flippa which is the website selling platform and have a look at the types of sites that have been selling by clicking the "Just Sold" button.

What you are looking for are sites where there have been a number of bids for the niche. Why? Lots of bids means interest in the niche or site that was created. Use this method to find the niches that will be popular sellers in the marketplace.

There will always be niches that are evergreen (forever popular) like health and money :) and love that you can choose from as well.

Here’s a site that was created the same day that it was listed.  It has 0 traffic and earnings and sold for $297.00.   How many sites could you make and sell per day?

Found your niche? Good.

I use Market Samurai for keyword research but if you don’t have that software nip over and google keyword tool and do some research for your niche. When you have the search results look through the keywords and see if one would be suitable to build a niche site out of.

I’ve typed in "office desk" as my niche and my results show there are a lot of smaller niches within this niche that I can target like "wood office desk", "glass office desk" etc

Choose one that you fancy that has good search volume and lots of advertisers.

Now, you need to analyse the competition for your primary keyword. If you don’t have Market Samurai use the SEO Quake FireFox add on.

Insert your keyword in the google search box with quotes and without and analyze the results with the SEO Quake add on. Is there a lot of competing websites – I like less than 50,000 personally. Do the top ranking sites have an aged domain, thousands of backlinks ie something that would make it hard for you to beat them on? Now analyze whether they are optimizing their title tag by going to Google again and typing your keywords in the search box "allintitle: glass office desk" .

A winning keyword for me is one that has more than 100 searches per day, less than 50,000 competing websites and all in title of less than 10,000. You might want to do something different :)

Okay now that you have your primary keyword it’s time to get some related keywords. You can do that by searching again for similar words in Google or stop off at the Google wonder wheel and look for related keywords if you are into LSI. Try and get 10 keywords for your site.

Now, time to buy a domain name. A domain name that gets indexed lickety split is one that is keyword relevant so head over GoDaddy or your fave registrar and start typing in all the keywords until you find a domain name that is your keyword. I prefer a ".com" domain name but if that is taken then I will go net or org. If they are taken I’ll move to the next keyword. Also, if one of the names is taken ".com" for instance remember to go and check the site. If it is a parked domain name no problem go ahead and get the ".net" but if there’s already a site up skip this keyword and move on to the next.

Okay that’s enough for lesson 1 :) I’ll be back soon with lesson 2
