<itunes:summary>Last year I did quite a few interviews with people. There's one that really stands out for me which is this one. The reason that it stands out for me is that the interviewer managed to weedle more out of my life story than anyone else ever has.

and that's how it should be because ...

I was interviewed as part of a series "Defining Moments of Internet Marketing". The series is the brain child of internet marketer Seth Larrabee. Seth approached a number of internet marketers including greats like John Carlton and Ed Dale and over 50 more internet marketers and interviewed them on what their "defining moments" were. The "aha" moment that brought people to internet marketing. His goal was to get into their head and see what you can learn from other marketers.

I was honoured (and surprised) that Seth asked me to be a part of this.

You can check out the interview below between Seth and I.

You can check out the entire series of Defining Moments of Internet Marketing here (you can also opt in to listen to some free interviews as well)

<itunes:summary>The other day I bought yet another WordPress book (I have a few!). I was really looking forward to the release of this one though because I had met one of the co-authors previously.

He had whetted my appetite for all things WordPress when he gave me a quick run down of what I could expect in the book when it was released.

Of course, once it was released I immediately purchased and devoured the book in one sitting (same thing I do with chocolate!). I just knew once I had read the book that I had to share the gist of it with you as well.

The WordPress Anthology is not a "how to" WordPress book per se but focuses more on the how and why. The book was created to give a University course, if you like, on the basics of WordPress, more intermediate topics and then advanced topics for those of us who yearn to develop WordPress plugins in the future.

What I really liked about the book was that it takes you through a journey of understanding the basics of WordPress to setting the stage where you can learn to develop your own plugins (and what essential things you need to consider if you are doing that).

One of the strengths of the book is the examples that are interspersed throughout the book. You aren't left scratching your head and trying to figure out the geek speak as it is all set out for you. For example, one of the chapters delves into the ins and outs of a plugin. You can see a real live plugin (that you can download from the repository) and dissect it to replicate the results yourself.

Another example I really liked was the section on localizing files. Localizing simply means converting a plugin or theme to another language. This allows you to increase your user base to other countries. Without localizing files you really are losing a lot of the global market that you could otherwise market to. I thought that this process might be a bit tricky. After all, if it was easy why aren't plugin developers and theme developers doing it all the time? Turns out it is actually easy. I'd even go so far to say it's super easy. If you follow the steps in the book localizing files should be a breeze. Of course, you will still need to get members of the WordPress community to do some translating for you :)

The WordPress Anthology is divided into 14 easy to read chapters (with useful notes and pointers along the way) which cover:

the basics of WordPress - getting started with WordPress, installing and understanding the interface
getting geeky - custom post types, the loop, file structuring
the fun stuff where design and functionality meets - plugins, themes and APIs!
	expanding with multisite (WordPress networking)
wake up call - remembering what is important, SEO, conversions and action

One of the authors of the book is Mick Olinik who is not only a super nice guy but also a WordPress developer. Mick is blessed with the unusual ability to be talented with both design and code (an unusual combination in my experience). This gives the book a lot more depth than a typical techie book and Mick really makes you think about Design and Functionality in the book. One of the best parts of the book is that it is full of live examples so you can follow along at your own pace while terminology is dissected.

Earlier in the week I caught up with Mick on Skype to discuss the new book and geek out in general over WordPress.

You can listen to the chat here:

You will get the inside scoop on:

the common mistake new developers make
the essential practices that developers need to do
the most exciting WordPress opportunity right now

<itunes:summary>I wrote in my book WordPress for Internet Marketers and WP Quick Cash years ago about using free WordPress podcasting plugins to get traffic and links to your site.

What is a podcast?

According to Wikipedia a podcast is:
a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. The word replaced webcast in common vernacular due to the fame of the iPod and its role in the rising popularity and innovation of web feeds.
How do you create a podcast?

You can easily create a podcast by reading one of your blog posts and recording it using free software like Audacity. Once you have made your recording upload it to your server and use a podcasting plugin to embed your podcast in your post and automatically submit it to Itunes.

Simply upload your podcast (using the WordPress media dashboard) and take note of the url of your podcast. Don't select the option to insert the podcast in the post because we are using a podcast player.

If you scroll to the bottom of your post you will see an option to insert the url of your podcast. Once your url has been inserted you will see further options that you can configure. When you have finished configuring just click the button to send to the editor.

Why create a podcast?

Creating a podcast serves a number of useful purposes.

it appeals to those who prefer to listen/watch rather than read your blog posts
you can submit the podcast to podcast directories for additional traffic
podcast submissions can bring extra link love to your site

I'm lazy this seems like hard work!

Yes it is a little bit of extra work but if you want to produce a quality result for your visitors then it's probably worth spending an extra 10 minutes or so on your blog post.

However, if you are super lazy :) you don't actually need to create the podcast yourself. You can rely on WordPress automation to do it for you.

Text to Speech plugins

There are a number of free WordPress plugins that convert text to speech

Nvoice
Odiogo
Cast My blog
Voz Me

I also recently tested this paid WordPress podcasting plugin but, at this stage, I prefer the ones listed above.
What about submitting it to podcasting directories?

The first one that you should be submitting to is itunes. Take an extra 5 minutes to add a cool logo to your podcast to make it more interesting for Itunes browsers. The free podcasting player listed above will automatically submit your podcasts to itunes.

Then you can use a free service like PodSubmitter to submit to 55 other directories.

Where's your podcast Leanne?

It's right here below :)

Enjoy</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A lot of people are concerned about security for their WordPress blog with good reason. A lot of effort and time as well as money can go into the creation of your website.
Imagine how you would feel if you woke up one day and found that your site had been hacked?
Well, it's not all doom and gloom there are things that YOU can do right now to improve the security of your WordPress site.
I don't profess to be a WordPress security expert (although I do know a few things :) ) so I interviewed a WordPress security expert, Mark Edwards from WP Security and picked his brains for over an hour and a half.
You can listen to that interview by using the audio player

If you prefer, you can download the mp3 file

Or, download the wav file (this is better quality)

I know some of you detest listening to stuff and would prefer to just scan through things so I've typed up a transcript of the audio as well. Now, I will be honest I'm not a typist so there are probably typos and bits missed out.

I hope you enjoy the interview and you take action today to improve the security of your WordPress site.

All the best
Leanne
